The Gaspar de Portolà Players

For the last ten years, the Gaspar de Portolà Players have treated our chapter to the stories of Suffragettes, Abolitionists, Woman Spies in the Revolutionary War, First Ladies, Lusty Ladies of the Wild West, and the Woman of Temperance.  The players are compromised of chapter members who volunteer to join the cast for the no memorizing, no rehearsing performance.  Last year's program, "Assassins", was held at our April 2023 meeting.

Historical Marker Dedications

September 7, 2019:  In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the first European sighting of the San Francisco Bay by our chapter’s namesake, Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà, we commissioned a historical marker to be placed near his expedition’s November 5, 1769, campsite along Canada Road and the Crystal Springs trail in Woodside, California. 

September 12, 2021:  International Broadcast Station KGEI located in Redwood Shores, California broadcast to troops in Asia during World War II.

 

Memorial Day

Our chapter participates in the Historic Union Cemetery of Redwood City's Memorial Day celebration each year.  Chapter members standing in the GAR Plot from the May 29, 2023 Celebration.

 

 

 

Redwood City Fourth of July Parade

Since 2013 our chapter has participated in the parade.  Each year our entry has been recognized as one of the top floats in the amateur category.  

 

 American History Essay Contest

Our chapter participates in the DAR sponsored American History essay contest.  Chapter members select a winner and runner-up in fifth through eight-grades from local schools. Our last year's eighth grade chapter winner went on to win the best eight grade essay in the state of California.
